Summer is here!!
Summer is here and we're excited – and so are our pets. The smell of the beach, fresh cut grass, barbecues, sunscreen, blooming flowers and that forgotten dog poop in the park which your dog might try and persuade you, is a delicious conditioner for his or her coat. But hey, it could be worse, you could have stepped in it – so maybe your dog did you a favour.
Along with the usual cautions about water – did we mention that access to plenty of water is an essential requirement for your furry loved one? – there's also the dangers of snakes, spiders and Kangaroos. Yes, Kangaroos – as lovable as they are – can be defensive, especially if they're pregnant. Dogs don't see them as a threat, they rush up to them and often just want to play. If you live near an area with plenty of Kangaroos, it might be an idea to keep your pet on a lead.
Australia has some of the most dangerous and poisonous snakes in the world. They often hide in tall grass, especially in bushland. Keep your pets safe by considering potential snake habitats.
Here's 5 other handy tips for you and your pet for the coming summer months:
1: Dogs and cats lick to help regulate their body temperature, so make sure they have access to plenty of water.
2: Never leave your dog or cat in an enclosed space. Dogs regulate body heat by panting. The warmer it is, then the more they pant. In an enclosed environment – like a car - the higher the chance it will suffer heatstroke. A hot car is not only dangerous, but potentially deadly, even for just 2 minutes.
3: Exercise your dog in the morning or at the end of the day, when it is cooler. Make sure you bring water. A smart thing to do is to use one of our collapsible travel bowls. They clip onto your bag or belt and are extreemly light and handy. Also check the temperature of the footpath with your hand. If its too hot for your hand, its too hot for your dogs pays. Stick to the grassed areas.
4: A paddling pool is cheap and a perfect way for your dog or cat to keep cool when they want to. Encourage your pet to get wet, to stay cool. A clam shell from Bunnings is perfect and cheap.
5: If you have fish, make sure the water is clean and topped up! You'd be surprised how many people don't realise that water evaporates quickly. And a handy tip is to freeze drink bottles full of water and put them in the water on hot days. This helps keep their water cool.
